The griffin is a well-known mythical creature that is known in many cultures. In many
stories they are considered immortal and always faithful to their keepers.
Although Albertus Magnus already referred the gryphon to the realm of fable, many
believed it to be a real living being until the end of the Middle Ages, much like the dragon. Man found many drinking vessels that were decorated with him or held by gryphons.
A vessel type in the form of a drinking horn mounted on griffin feet was therefore also
called the "griffin claw".
