Medieval bronze chains

Medieval jewelry - Bronze chains

The use of bronze shaped an entire period of human history, the so-called Bronze Age. There it was also often used to make jewelry.

The Bronze Age lasted from around the 3rd millennium BC. BC to the beginning of the 1st millennium BC. It encompassed not only Europe but also other cultures in North Africa and Asia, although the definition of the Bronze Age varies slightly in different cultures. The Near East is considered the starting point for the use of bronze. The oldest evidence of the use and processing of bronze comes from Palestine around 3,300 BC. Bronze was the hardest material that humanity knew until the discovery of iron (Iron Age), which is why even swords and axes were made of bronze.
Before other materials such as gold and silver began their triumph in jewelry production, bronze was considered a bad material. Since bronze looks very authentic due to its history  Bronze jewelry is very popular again, especially among fans of ancient and early medieval motifs.

What is bronze?

Bronze is an alloy made from copper and tin. Since there are no exact specifications for the composition, both materials can be mixed in different proportions, whereby for jewelry production usually around 90% copper and 10 % tin can be used. If you reduce the tin content, the bronze becomes more copper-colored; if you increase the proportion, it becomes more golden in color, which is known for bronze.

Material properties and care

Fresh from production, our bronze jewelry is very light. When you unpack the jewelry, you can notice that it becomes darker after a while. This is due to the reaction of the copper with the humidity in the air. After a while you get the antique-looking dark golden color that is typical of bronze. This process is accelerated by contact with sweat, e.g. by touching. However, pressure points caused by touching can also cause darker spots, especially on smooth surfaces, while the rest of the piece of jewelry is still lighter. Unsightly pressure marks can easily be polished away; the easiest way to do this is with a silver cleaning cloth.
